Annual singing contest cancelled as virus spreads
Eurovision fans are disappointed due to the cancellation of this year’s edition. For decades fans have tuned into BBC One to watch performers from across Europe sing their hearts out in the hopes of being crowned the winner. In 2020, however, the global spread of coronavirus has put an end to that.
The singing contest’s hosts EBU (European Broadcasting Union) are “looked at various scenarios” but decided to cancel this year’s edition as the virus continues to plague the globe.
According to The Daily Star Online, a representative for the EBU said: “The EBU is, closely monitored the situation concerning the spread of coronavirus and took all necessary health and safety precautions in line with WHO (World Health Organisation) and national authority guidelines,
“We followed developments across Europe; and looked at various possible scenarios together with the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 host broadcasters NPO, NOS and AVROTROS.”
The competition wass due to take place in Rotterdam, Holland and was expected to attract thousands of fans from across the continent.
