The recently-published strategy for the sister island by the Gozo Regional Development Authority has hit the nail on the head with the slogan…an island of villages. However, it is yet to be seen whether this document is just wishful thinking or else a sincere commitment to change direction before it is too late.

Picturesque villages, each with its own distinct personality and story to tell, lie at the heart of Gozo’s identity. These are the lifeblood of Gozitan culture and deserve recognition for their contributions to the island’s identity and allure.

One of the defining features of Gozo’s village life is its unhurried pace, so much so that it is often referred to as the island where time stood still. However, certain areas like Xlendi and Marsalforn are fast losing their charm, amid concerns over anti-social behaviour, crime and over development.

On the other hand, certain localities still offer a breathtaking experience. Strolling through the narrow streets and alleyways of villages like Victoria, Għarb, or Xagħra allows for a deep connection with the island’s rich history and traditions.

The architectural treasures found within Gozo’s villages are a testament to the island’s enduring heritage. Quaint stone houses with colourful wooden balconies, charming village squares adorned with churches and chapels, and centuries-old farmhouses dotting the countryside evoke a sense of timelessness. The preservation of these architectural gems is not just an aesthetic choice but also a commitment to honouring Gozo’s past.

Gozitan villages are not just places to live but vibrant communities with their particular cultural and religious traditions which stand out from the rest of the country.

As Gozo’s tourism industry continues to grow, it is crucial to strike a balance between development and the preservation of the island’s village life. While the influx of tourists brings economic benefits, it should not come at the cost of the villages’ unique character. Sustainable tourism initiatives that promote responsible travel and respect for local culture are essential.

Gozo’s villages are the heart and soul of the island. They provide a window into Gozo’s rich history, culture, and traditions. As we cherish the beauty and tranquillity of these villages, we must also work collectively to ensure their preservation. By fostering sustainable tourism, respecting local traditions, and protecting the architectural heritage, we can ensure that Gozo remains an island of villages, where time slows down, and the spirit of the past continues to thrive. It is now time to start translating the 2023 strategy from words to action.
