With a budget of around €95.5 billion, Horizon Europe is the EU’s funding programme for Research and Innovation (R&I) for the period 2021-2027.

Horizon Europe seeks to strengthen the EU’s scientific and technological bases, develop and boost Europe’s innovation capacity, competitiveness, and jobs, and deliver on European citizens’ priorities.

Horizon Europe will allow Maltese stakeholders to turn the current innovation and research challenges into opportunities. It will provide a multitude of funding opportunities cutting across all disciplines – from basic research in all fields of science to the development of technology that creates innovative products and services and scaling them up to the market. It also supports the mobility of researchers so that they can enhance their professional contribution to European innovation, and the investment in cutting-edge research infrastructure and equipment.

As a result of Horizon Europe, Malta will be able to tap into funding for vital priorities, such as the green transition, sustainable energy, automated transport, AI, healthcare and industrial manufacturing.

The first work programmes under Horizon Europe are expected to be published in April.
