The green and digital transitions are opening new opportunities for people and the EU economy. Having the relevant skills empowers people to successfully navigate labour market changes and to fully engage in society and democracy. In this context, the EU has dedicated 2023 as the European Year of Skills.

The overall objective of the European Year of Skills shall be to promote a mindset of reskilling and upskilling with the aim of boosting competitiveness of European companies, especially SMEs. This will in turn allow companies to reach the full potential of the digital and green transitions in a socially fair, inclusive and just manner.

Throughout 2023, the European Commission in cooperation with European Parliament, Member States, social partners, public and other relevant stakeholders, shall seek to:

  • Promote increased, and more effective and inclusive investment in training and upskilling
  • Make sure that skills are relevant for labour market needs
  • Match people’s aspirations and skill sets with opportunities on the job market
  • Attract people from third countries with the skills needed

To meet these objectives, the EU shall promote EU funding opportunities and organise events and awareness-raising campaigns related to upskilling and reskilling.
