Over 40 delegates from across Europe took part in a conference themed Capacity building of a modern trade union: Strengthening the educational and digitalization aspects. The event held at the Urban Valley Resort, in San Gwann between 27th and 28th November, was organised by UHM Voice of the Workers, with the support of EZA (European Centre for Workers’ Questions).

In his address UHM CEO Josef Vella called for the setting up of a central EU agency whose remit would be to support unions in terms of capacity building. He noted that despite the money being allocated by Brussels to support social dialogue, this is not trickling to grassroot level. Hence, unions are struggling to fund projects on research, capacity building and to strengthen their organization to respond the changing labour market. The UHM CEO also reiterated his call to address the issue of free riders, saying this was eroding collective bargaining and could ultimately cost very dear.

The two-day event also tackled issues such as the impact of artificial intelligence at the workplace and on trade unions, as well as means to engage with young people through social media.

Apart from presentations, delegates also had the opportunity to engage in a number of debates on key issues ways to communicate better with the union members and to improve the public engagement through social media. Prof. Godfrey Baldacchino and Media Coop Head John Mallia were among the speakers.

The panel debates featured MCESD chair David Xuereb, Malta Employers Association Consultant Joe Farrugia, Parliamentary Secretary for Social Dialogue Any Ellul and the respective Shadow Minister Ivan Castillo.
