She will continue to lead Parliament for the first two and a half years of the 10th legislative term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Voting results<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/meps\/en\/118859\/ROBERTA_METSOLA\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Roberta Metsola<\/a>&nbsp;(EPP, MT) 562<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/meps\/en\/245770\/IRENE_MONTERO\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Irene Montero<\/a>&nbsp;(The Left, ES) 61<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Total votes cast: 699<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Blank or invalid votes: 76<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Absolute majority needed: 312<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Who is Roberta Metsola<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Born in Malta in 1979, Roberta Metsola has been an MEP since 2013.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/en\/press-room\/20201109IPR91126\/roberta-metsola-elected-as-first-vice-president-of-the-european-parliament\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">She was elected First Vice-President in November 2020<\/a>, and was Parliament\u2019s acting President after President Sassoli passed away on 11 January 2022. On 18 January 2022,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/en\/press-room\/20220114IPR21012\/roberta-metsola-elected-new-president-of-the-european-parliament\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">she was elected President<\/a>&nbsp;for the second half of the 9th legislative term. She is the third female President of the European Parliament, after&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/en\/headlines\/eu-affairs\/20160811STO39006\/simone-veil-a-woman-of-many-firsts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Simone Veil<\/a>&nbsp;(1979-1982) and Nicole Fontaine (1999-2002).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Addressing the House after she was elected, President Metsola said: \u201cTogether, we must stand up for the politics of hope, for the dream that is Europe. I want people to recapture a sense of belief and enthusiasm for our project. A belief to make our shared space safer, fairer, more just and more equal. A belief that together we are stronger and we are better. A belief that ours is a Europe for all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Watch the entire speech <a href=\"https:\/\/multimedia.europarl.europa.eu\/en\/share\/I259535?autoplay=off&amp;controls=on\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About Parliament\u2019s President<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/the-president.europarl.europa.eu\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">President<\/a>&nbsp;enjoys a broad range of executive and representative powers set out in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/doceo\/document\/lastrules\/TOC_EN.html?redirect\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rules of Procedure<\/a>. Other than these duties, the President\u2019s authority extends to \u201call powers that are necessary to preside over the proceedings of Parliament and to ensure that they are properly conducted\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/TXT\/?uri=CELEX%3A12016M014\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Article 14 of the Treaty on the European Union<\/a>&nbsp;states that Parliament elects its President from among its Members. Since the first European elections (universal suffrage) in 1979, each President is in office for a renewable period of two and a half years. This means that there can be two Presidents in each legislative term.
