The discovery was made at the University of Malta with the help of fruit flies, whose DNA sequence overlaps with that of human beings by 75 per cent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>President Metsola also visited a number of laboratories, including the Fly Laboratory, the Metallurgy and Materials Labs and Engineering Laboratories. &nbsp;She thanked the researchers for their crucial work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEurope needs more of your research, of your ideas, of your ambition to find the solutions and the treatments needed today. This is why the European Union will continue to invest in research and innovation,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 2002, the University of Malta has been awarded \u20ac73.7 million worth of research funding from EU sources, mostly from Framework Programme (Horizon) projects, and Erasmus. This funding was spread over 550 projects involving 1,200 researchers and academics. The University also benefited from \u20ac137 million worth of funding for capital and social projects under ERDF or ESF schemes since 2008.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>President Metsola visits the \u2018European Bench\u2019 and meets with the newly elected members of KSU<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The EP President visited the \u2018European bench\u2019 at the University of Malta Campus in Msida. An initiative brought to Malta by the Young European Federalists (JEF) with the support of the European Parliament Office in Malta. The initiative aims to create spaces that foster dialogue, understanding, and collaboration among individuals from different European countries and promote European integration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"696\" src=\"http:\/\/weekly.uhm.org.mt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Rene_Rossignaud-0095-1024x696.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6744\" srcset=\"http:\/\/weekly.uhm.org.mt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Rene_Rossignaud-0095-1024x696.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/weekly.uhm.org.mt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Rene_Rossignaud-0095-300x204.jpg 300w, http:\/\/weekly.uhm.org.mt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Rene_Rossignaud-0095-768x522.jpg 768w, http:\/\/weekly.uhm.org.mt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Rene_Rossignaud-0095-1536x1043.jpg 1536w, http:\/\/weekly.uhm.org.mt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Rene_Rossignaud-0095-2048x1391.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>President Metsola met with the outgoing and newly elected members of <em>Kunsill Studenti Universitarji<\/em> (KSU) &#8211; the University of Malta\u2019s student body. During the meeting the President discussed issues related to education in Malta and encouraged the newly appointed executive to work on engaging more student activism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>President Metsola addresses the 37th InterAction Council Meeting held in Malta<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier, President Metsola addressed the 37th InterAction Council Meeting, held at the San Anton Presidential Palace. The President referred to the Council Meeting as \u201cas a call for action, a renewed impetus for change.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Referring to the various challenges being faced by the EU over the years, including the pandemic, war on our continent, the energy crises and inflation, President Metsola concluded that she is \u201cconvinced that because of Europe, and its global alliance of democracies, the world ahead will be better that the one we leave behind.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola made an official visit to the University of Malta where she met researchers, scientists, engineers and students.
