The proposal is aimed to ease the increased pressure on households and businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the proposed measures include the reduction of <strong>electricity consumption by at least 5% during selected peak price hours and the overall electricity demand by at least 10%<\/strong>&nbsp;by the end of March 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Commission is also proposing a<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>temporary revenue cap on \u2018inframarginal&#8217; electricity producers<\/strong>, namely technologies with lower costs, such as renewables, which provide electricity to the grid at a cost below the price level set by the more expensive \u2018marginal&#8217; producers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thirdly, the Commission is also proposing a&nbsp;<strong>temporary solidarity contribution<\/strong><strong>on excess profits<\/strong><strong>generated from activities in the oil, gas, coal and refinery sectors<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>which are not covered by the inframarginal revenue cap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Commission is also proposing to expand the <a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/TXT\/?uri=COM%3A2021%3A660%3AFIN&amp;qid=1634215984101\">Energy Prices Toolbox<\/a> to <strong>allow below cost regulated electricity prices for the first time<\/strong>, and expand regulated prices to<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>also cover small and medium-sized enterprises<\/strong>.<strong>&nbsp; <\/strong>The proposal is one of several initiatives being taken to bring down the price of gas, and reform the electricity market design for the longer term.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The European Commission has recently proposed a Council Regulation to tackle the dramatic rises in energy prices in the EU.
