This warrants a strengthening of workers\u2019 protection in view of possible future waves of the virus. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/social\/main.jsp?catId=148&amp;intPageId=683&amp;langId=en\">EU Advisory Committee on Safety and Health at Work (ACSH)<\/a>, Member States, workers, and employers <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/social\/main.jsp?langId=en&amp;catId=148&amp;furtherNews=yes&amp;newsId=10262\">came to an agreement<\/a> on the need to recognise COVID-19 as an occupational disease in sectors where there is an outbreak in activities with a proven risk of infection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some workers, especially those in the health and social care sectors, are at a higher risk of contracting COVID-19. While most Member States already recognise COVID-19 as an occupational disease, there is a need to promote such recognition in all Member States, allowing workers to acquire specific rights according to national rules, such as the right to compensation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The agreement is a significant step toward implementing the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_21_3170\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EU Strategic Framework on Health and Safety at Work 2021-2027<\/a>, and in which the Commission announced that by the end of the year, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/ALL\/?uri=CELEX%3A32003H0670\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Commission Recommendation on occupational diseases<\/a>&nbsp;would be updated to include COVID-19.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While the sanitary crisis in Europe linked to the COVID-19 pandemic has been improving, the epidemiological situation remains serious.
