{"id":4876,"date":"2021-07-01T17:00:44","date_gmt":"2021-07-01T15:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/weekly.uhm.org.mt\/?post_type=article&#038;p=4876"},"modified":"2021-07-01T17:05:46","modified_gmt":"2021-07-01T15:05:46","slug":"l-10-gemma-kmandamenti-biex-tipprotegi-lilek-innifsek-kontra-l-iscams-u-l-frodi","status":"publish","type":"article","link":"http:\/\/weekly.uhm.org.mt\/en\/article\/l-10-gemma-kmandamenti-biex-tipprotegi-lilek-innifsek-kontra-l-iscams-u-l-frodi\/","title":{"rendered":"The 10 Commandments to protect yourself against scams and fraud"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"235\" height=\"125\" src=\"http:\/\/weekly.uhm.org.mt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4832\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"843\" height=\"285\" src=\"http:\/\/weekly.uhm.org.mt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/GEMMA-150dpi.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4830\" srcset=\"http:\/\/weekly.uhm.org.mt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/GEMMA-150dpi.png 843w, http:\/\/weekly.uhm.org.mt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/GEMMA-150dpi-300x101.png 300w, http:\/\/weekly.uhm.org.mt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/GEMMA-150dpi-768x260.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 843px) 100vw, 843px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Article prepared by \u0120EMMA&nbsp;<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>(within\u00a0the Ministry for Social Justice and Solidarity, the Family and Children\u2019s Rights)<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently we have seen a spate of scams in Malta \u2013 including phishing, romance fraud and business email fraud.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gemma.gov.mt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u0120EMMA<\/a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/eskills.org.mt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">eSkills Malta Foundation<\/a>&nbsp; signed a strategic partnership to disseminate knowledge on digital financial capability.&nbsp; Fraud and scams&nbsp;are&nbsp;one such financial capability.&nbsp; Jointly we have&nbsp;issued&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/gemma.gov.mt\/ebook-download-page\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">4 e-books<\/a>&nbsp;on scams and fraud and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/gemma.gov.mt\/resources\/infographics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Infographics<\/a>&nbsp;on tips of how to protect yourself&nbsp;with regard to&nbsp;over 30 different scams and frauds.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u0120EMMA strongly advises you that you follow these 10 Commandments religiously at all times to protect yourself from scams and fraud:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>01<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Watch out for scams<\/strong> Scammers target you anytime, anywhere, anyhow.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>02<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Do not respond<\/strong> Ignore suspicious emails, letters, house visits, phones calls or SMS messages \u2013 press \u2018delete\u2019, throw them out, shut the door, or just hang up.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>03<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Do not agree to an offer straightaway<\/strong> Do your research and seek independent advice if it involves significant money, time or commitment, and get the offer in writing.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>04<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Ask yourself who you are really dealing with<\/strong> Scammers pose as people or organisations that you know and trust.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>05<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Do not let scammers push your buttons.<\/strong> Scammers will play on your emotions to get what they want, including adopting a personal touch. Alternatively, they seek to rush you into making a quick decision before you look into it. Remember there are no guaranteed get-rich-quick schemes!<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>06<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Keep your computer secure<\/strong> Always update your firewall, anti-virus and anti-spyware software, and buy only from a verified source.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>07<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Only pay online using a secure payment service<\/strong> Look for a URL starting with \u2018https\u2019 and a closed padlock symbol.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>08<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Do not hand over money and information to someone you do not know and trust<\/strong> Any request for payment by an unusual method such as wire transfers, reloadable cards, or gift cards that are nearly impossible to reverse or track is a tell-tale sign that it is part of a scam. And if you do hand money &#8230; it is rare to recover<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>09<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Protect your identity<\/strong> Your personal details are private and invaluable. Keep them that way and away from scammers.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>10<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>If you spot a scam, spread the word.<\/strong> Tell your family and friends, and report it to: computer.crime@gov.mt.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to these 10 Commandments, keep in mind the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>It is NOT always true that companies, businesses and enterprises are always legitimate. Scammers can easily pretend to have approval and registrations when in fact they do not.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>It is NOT always true that all websites are legitimate. It is easy and cheap to set up a website. And an enterprise\u2019s website can be easily copied by scammers who will want to trick you into believing it to be genuine.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>It is NOT always true that scams involve large amounts of money. Sometimes scammers target many people and try to get a small amount of money from each person.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>It is NOT always true that scams are always about money.
