{"id":3941,"date":"2020-08-26T17:14:49","date_gmt":"2020-08-26T15:14:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/weekly.uhm.org.mt\/?post_type=article&#038;p=3941"},"modified":"2020-08-26T17:15:53","modified_gmt":"2020-08-26T15:15:53","slug":"lura-ghall-iskola-2","status":"publish","type":"article","link":"http:\/\/weekly.uhm.org.mt\/en\/article\/lura-ghall-iskola-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Back to school?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3936\" src=\"http:\/\/weekly.uhm.org.mt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/23B84ECD-DF01-453A-9DCF-3924A7DB3FC9.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"624\" height=\"415\" srcset=\"http:\/\/weekly.uhm.org.mt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/23B84ECD-DF01-453A-9DCF-3924A7DB3FC9.jpeg 624w, http:\/\/weekly.uhm.org.mt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/23B84ECD-DF01-453A-9DCF-3924A7DB3FC9-300x200.jpeg 300w, http:\/\/weekly.uhm.org.mt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/23B84ECD-DF01-453A-9DCF-3924A7DB3FC9-480x320.jpeg 480w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"s5\"><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Parents<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">understandably<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">are<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">questioning<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">whether<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">schools<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">will<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">reopen<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">at<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> \u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">the<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">end<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> of \u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">next<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">month<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">However, common sense dictates that s<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">chools should only be reopened when it is safe for students. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s5\"><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Going back to school will likely look a little different from what <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">parents<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">and <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">their<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">children<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> were used to before. It\u2019s possible that schools may reopen for a period of time and then a decision may be made to close them again temporarily, depending on the <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">circumstances<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Due<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">to<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">the<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">evolving situation, authorities will need to be flexible and ready to adapt to ensure the safety of every <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">student<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s6\"><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Even if <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">the<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">authorities<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> have not yet decided to reopen schools, they <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">should<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">have<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">already<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">made<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">detailed planning, to help ensure students, teachers and other staff are safe when they return and <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">parents<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">or<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">guardians<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> are confident in sending their students back to school.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s6\"><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">The <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">reopening<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> of <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">schools<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">should be consistent with <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">the<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">country\u2019s overall COVID-19 health response to protect students, staff, teachers and their families.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Schools<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">can<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">take<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">practical<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">measures<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">such<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">as<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, s<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">taggering<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> the start and close of the school day<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">; s<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">taggering<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> mealtimes<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> and h<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">olding<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> school in shifts to reduce class size<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s6\"><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Moreover<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, w<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">ater<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> and hygiene facilities will be a crucial part of schools reopening safely. Administrators should look at opportunities to improve hygiene measures, including handwashing, respiratory etiquette (i.e. coughing and sneezing into the elbow), physical distancing measures<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> cleaning procedures for facilities. Administrative staff and teachers should also be trained on physical distancing and school hygiene practices.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s6\"><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Students have persisted with their lessons under difficult circumstances, with the support of their dedicated teachers and parents.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">However<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> many children will need extra support to catch up on their learning<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">when schools reopen.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s6\"><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Many schools <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">might<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">be<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">making plans for catch-up lessons to help bring students back up to speed. This might include starting the year with refresher courses<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">or supplemental assignments to be done at home. Given the possibility that many schools may not open full time or for all grades, schools may implement \u2018blended learning\u2019 models, a mix of classroom instruction and remote education.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s6\"><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Furthermore<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">we<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">must<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> r<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">emember<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> that child<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">ren<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> will be dealing with the stress of the ongoing crisis differently from <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">adults<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">So<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">we<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">need<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">to<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> c<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">reate<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> a supportive and nurturing environment and <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">respond positively to questions and expressions of their feelings. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">We<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">can<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> s<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">how support and let <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">children<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> know that it\u2019s normal to feel frustrated or anxious at times like this.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Parents<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">or<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">guardians<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">can<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> h<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">elp<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> children to stick to their routines and make learning playful by incorporating it into everyday activities like cooking, family reading time or games.
