As a response to the coronavirus, the\u00a0<\/span>EU\u00a0 has<\/span>\u00a0allocated \u20ac1 billion through the Horizon 2020\u00a0<\/span>programme<\/span>\u00a0to increase research and innovation in healthcare.\u00a0<\/span>The Horizon 2020\u00a0<\/span>programme<\/span>\u00a0is the<\/span>\u00a0EU\u2019s flagship initiative for the financing of projects which aim to place Europe at the forefront of global research and innovation.\u00a0<\/span>The Horizon 2020\u00a0<\/span>programme<\/span>\u00a0was also\u00a0<\/span>utili<\/span>s<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0in recent years as a means of emergency funding for past outbreaks such\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span>\u00a0the Zika and Ebola viruses, making it easy to\u00a0<\/span>mobilise<\/span>\u00a0in this scenario.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The first\u00a0<\/span>call\u00a0<\/span>financed 18\u00a0<\/span>research\u00a0<\/span>projects<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>worth\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u20ac<\/span>48.2 million,\u00a0<\/span>directed towards\u00a0<\/span>diagnostics, treatment, vaccines<\/span>\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0improving preparedness for outbreaks<\/span>. A second\u00a0<\/span>call for innovative and rapid health-related approaches<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>to respond to COVID-19 and to deliver quick results for society<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>for a higher level of preparedness of health systems<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>was made public in May 2020.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to these\u00a0<\/span>calls<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>\u20ac400 million\u00a0<\/span>were<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>allocated to\u00a0<\/span>the r<\/span>einforcement of\u00a0<\/span>InnovFin<\/span>\u00a0Infection Diseases Financial Facility<\/span>, which provides financing\u00a0<\/span>to innovative players active in developing innovative vaccines, drugs, medical and diagnostic\u00a0<\/span>devices<\/span>\u00a0or novel research infrastructures for combatting infectious diseases.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
