During the campaign to choose a new leader\u00a0<\/span>of<\/span>\u00a0the Labour Party<\/span>\u00a0and, automatically, the new Prime Minister of Malta, we often heard\u00a0<\/span>Dr.<\/span>\u00a0Robert\u00a0<\/span>Abela<\/span>\u00a0say that he has workers at heart and\u00a0<\/span>he believes that workers should earn a decent wage. He\u00a0<\/span>has even<\/span>\u00a0said that he believes in the concept of\u00a0<\/span>Equal Pay for Work of Equal Value<\/span><\/i>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now that he has been elected,\u00a0<\/span>he should do well to remember that\u00a0<\/span>charity begins at home.<\/span>\u00a0In this case, it is not charity that we want, but the implementation of the right of workers who do the same work to have the same conditions. And if this right is not given to the workers who provide services to Government, led by the Prime Minister himself, then who are we going to give it to?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Steward Health Care<\/span>\u00a0has now been operating in Malta for\u00a0<\/span>over<\/span>\u00a0two years. This company came\u00a0<\/span>to Malta<\/span>\u00a0following its acquisition of the hospitals from\u00a0<\/span>Vitals Healthcare<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>We<\/span>\u00a0know more about what this company earned than what it\u00a0<\/span>did<\/span>\u00a0and the same could be said of\u00a0<\/span>Steward Health Care<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0To date,\u00a0<\/span>neither has it improved its work practices, nor\u00a0<\/span>has it modernised the hospital as we were promised. The only difference we have seen since they took over the hospitals is to employ professionals that do the same work, in the same wards and with the same patients as those employed by Government \u2013 but with inferior working conditions. As though it is not the same work that they are doing and with the same dedication!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Therefore, the appeal that this union is making is clear: the Prime Minister should immediately make good on the promise of giving workers their dignity. The workers who are directly employed with\u00a0<\/span>Steward Health Care<\/span>\u00a0should be absorbed by Government. At the end of the day it is the Government\u00a0<\/span>that is receiving the service and it is the Government<\/span>\u00a0that is paying\u00a0<\/span>Steward\u00a0<\/span>for the service.<\/span>\u00a0So why does it not pay the workers directly without involving third parties who line their pockets?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
