The situation in Malta is still\u00a0<\/span>very worrying. It is damaging to our country\u2019s image and to direct foreign investment.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The country has worked very hard to position itself on the international sphere. The country\u2019s image, or Brand Malta as it was nicknamed, is important when it comes to attracting international investment. Under the current circumstances, Brand Malta<\/span>\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0positive connotations\u00a0<\/span>are being replaced with<\/span>\u00a0problems and negative connotations. The bad reputation we are earning is\u00a0<\/span>creating<\/span>\u00a0an image of a corrupt nation; we are being regarded as a\u00a0<\/span>country where<\/span>\u00a0criminal<\/span>ity occurs not business<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The trust we use to enjoy is eroding bit by bit and\u00a0<\/span>this precarious position is already having an impact on business and investment in the country. Malta\u2019s image is quite bad at the moment and we are no longer being considered as an attractive proposition for business and a place that has trustworthy politicians.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We are in danger of being\u00a0<\/span>marginalised<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>internationally<\/span>\u00a0and no longer being considered a dependable country. The fact that we are European Union members should have certain implications. As a European Union member state, Malta has certain responsibilities. It will be to our detriment if we became problematic. As things stand, it is difficult to predict whether the European Union will o<\/span>rder sanctions against us.\u00a0 What is sure is that the European Union will try and persuade us to act in a correct way. We hope that the European Union will not take more drastic measures because then everyone will be affected.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Before the<\/span>\u00a0country\u00a0<\/span>can<\/span>\u00a0get back to normal<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0we need to<\/span>\u00a0get serious. In other countries, when there are national problems of this magnitude, those in responsible political positions resign.\u00a0<\/span>This is the practice that is adopted in many foreign countries, particularly the Nordic ones. We recently read and heard about the Prime Minister of Finland resigning because he lied about reforms in the postal service. The Prime Minister of our country should follow the example of his ex-European colleague who resigned over an issue that was of far less import than the one in Malta.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Prime Minister, for the good of the workers and their families and for the sake of Malta\u2019s image in the world, instead of touring the village squares for applause, do the mature thing and resign immediately.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
