At times it is the individual\u2019s free choice to do so, but sometimes an employee is constrained to reply even outside working hours or during days off.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">MEUSAC organised a conference entitled\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Right to Disconnect<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">at Hotel<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Suncrest<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Qawra<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0on the 28 October 2019 to discuss this issue.\u00a0 Mario Sacco, Assistant Director at\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">U\u0126M\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Voice of the Workers<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, attended and participated in this conference.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">During one of the workshops led by Marco Sacco\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">it\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">emerged that the\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Right to Disconnect<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0is not<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0new.\u00a0 In the days before we entered the digital age, employees often took work home to complete it for their own peace of mind. Some did this voluntarily and others were constrained by their employers to do so. Today, with technology at our fingertips, it is easier for employers\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0contact employees at all times and ask them to do a piece of work outside working hours.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One of the outcomes of the discussion was that employers should not communicate with their employees on personal gadgets.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0The same applies to the employees. They should not use their personal email for work purposes. Mario Sacco ask<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0if the internet is provided by the employer, can the employee switch it off at<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0a specific time? Does the employee have a right to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">switch<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0off work communication means during rest periods?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Marco Sacco said that there are many workers who are given a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0work<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0laptop and mobile<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and employers often expect workers to use them even outside working hours. He said that there are three sides to this issue: the issue may not be directly created by the employer but by the nature of the work if it involves giving a direct service to clients and communicating with them; there is the element of feeling obliged, or the employer making the worker feel obliged because they provided them with and are paying for the means of communication; and, there is also the element of, due to lack of awareness, workers giving out their mobile number or email over social media such as\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">facebook<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, messenger and twitter when they are not obliged to.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Three things are required in the future.
