But what happens when once they\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">step into the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0European region, in our case, in Malta?<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0For many of these people<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0adjusting to local life is difficult.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Researchers\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">refer to\u00a0\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the\u00a0lost generation<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, that is, a generation comprising professionals who come from the African continent or from the East who end up in Europe and are not able to integrate into the job market.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:142,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Integration is about learning<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">written and unwritten rules, cultural traditions and ways of being of a foreign country. For integration to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">work,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0access to the job market needs to be facilitated and skills should be recognised early on. The main issue is how to make the integration process more efficient. One finds\u00a0a number of\u00a0qualified refugees who are not working, even in our country, and this is a waste of human capital.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:142,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I think that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the way a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">refugee\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is received and welcomed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0is\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">key<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to integration,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">coupled with measures including a course in the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0language of the receiving country, cultural orientation and help joining the job market<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">which measures should be put in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0place by all the European member states, including Malta. This would greatly facilitate the integration of refugees.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:142,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In my opinion, we should also consider the fact that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the help that is given to refugees and asylum seekers to help them integrate should not be seen as solely a humanitarian gesture that benefits only the refugees themselves, but as an investment made by the country that is providing refuge. Refugees who<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0are integrated help strengthen society and the social system.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:142,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">From a demographic perspective, Europe needs to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0get stronger and all the member states (not just those in the Mediterranean) should take in migrants who are looking for asylum and a better life. This is not just a question of helping refugees; it is also in the interest of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Europe, in\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">terms<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0of better management of mobility.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:142,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Many refugees hope to return to their place of birth to live and work one day, but for now Europe is their home.
