Stories of discrimination, corruption and misuse of power often see the light of day because an investigative journalist did their job.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Worryingly,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0sign<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0of repression and violation of the freedom of expression\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">have been observed in a number of European countries. Different forms of control and pressure on media content hinder journalists\u2019 independence and pluralism. There\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">will<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0always<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0be<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0cases of journalists who are deprived of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">their\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">liberty or, worse, killed because of the job they do.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Take\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">assassination of Daphne\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Caruana<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Galizia<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0in Malta and the killing of Slovak journalist Jan\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Kuciak<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and his partner\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Martina Kusnirova<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, among others<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. They<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0paid the ultimate price because they revealed the truth.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:142,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The world is becoming a very dangerous place for journalists.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0The journalism sector is often the target of authoritarian leaders whose job is to consolidate their own power. Instead of enacting laws and regulations that create a supportive environment for the media, such governments aggressive<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ly control the media through nepotism and attacks on independent media houses.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:142,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Censorship also\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">suffocates reporting on controversial subjects. In many countries around the world, laws and administrative practices are being abused in a way that censors critical voices and kills off public debates. The journalists that report about controversial issues are\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">sometimes<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0themselves the main targets of these actions.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:142,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">J<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ournalists are\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">operating at great risk to themselves the world over. Threats, surveillance and even arrests and even the killing of journalists are often the consequences of reporting the truth.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:142,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The role of the media as a source of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0objective<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0information<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0is challenged when the professional and ethical standards of journalism are low. The lack of quality training institutions and the lack of professionalism in the sector together with low wages create problems when it comes to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">retaining staff. This impacts the credibility and trust in the media. Neutrality and objectivity are the main pillars of a society that benefits from journalism.
