Do you take the money but return the wallet? Do you leave it at a Police Station and forget about it?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Researchers from the Universities of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Zurich, Michigan\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Utah<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0asked<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0these questions in a recent study that aimed to find out how many honest people there are around the world.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:142,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Researchers<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0who posed as normal citizens passed on close to 17,000 false wallets to banks, theatres, post offices, hotels, police stations and other public places in 40 countries. Then they waited to see if the employees receiving the wallets contacted the owners.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:142,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The wallets<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0each<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0contained business cards that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">showed the name and personal information of the owners, a grocery list and a key. Some did not contain money while others had some change.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:142,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The main<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0findings of this research showed that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">wallets containing some change were more likely to be returned to their owners than wallets that did not contain any money. This was true in 38 out of 40 countries (with the exception of Mexico and Peru).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:142,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">While they were<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0carrying out the study in Poland, the UK and the US, the researchers found that the more money the wallet contained, the more people felt that they were stealing if they did not return it. One exception to this was when the wallets were handed\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0police stations. Here it was found that the wallets were rarely returned to their owners<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. This may be because the majority of police stations expect the owners to lodge a lost report or check whether their\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">wallet<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0was handed in at the police station.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:142,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The study was originally\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">meant to focus on European countries but it was eventually extended to other countries around the world.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:142,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Christian Z<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u03cb<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">nd,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0one of the authors of this report, said that there is a strong correlation with the financial income of the citizens of the country in question.
