At some point in our l<\/span>ives<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>we all had a relationship with someone \u2013 maybe with a parent, a teacher or an employer \u2013 who changed the way we look at life.\u00a0<\/span>Someone who had high moral standards and was instrumental in our development.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Someone who inspired and motivated us.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Someone who taught us to look to the future and instilled in us the confidence to set our goals and go out and reach them.<\/span>\u00a0That someone is a true leader.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Today we are surrounded by people who call themselves leaders \u2013 in government, at the workplace or in education. But I am sorry to say\u00a0<\/span>that\u00a0<\/span>we are\u00a0<\/span>lacking true leadership. Where are these people leading us and to what aim?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Some Maltese people have been deluded so many times and have experienced such a great level of abuse of power that they no longer trust their leaders. However, although we may be cynical of all that is happening around us, we have to resign ourselves to the fact that we still need people to run the different sectors that make up our society.\u00a0<\/span>Preoccupied as we are with running our own lives, we are all more than ready to elect others to run our country.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n How can we\u00a0<\/span>recognise a good leader? Many of our leaders are good managers, some even inspire others. We have politicians, for instance, whose rhetoric inspires thousands of citizens to support them. However they are missing something simple that is\u00a0<\/span>key<\/span>\u00a0\u2013 a vision of life itself.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Mexxej ta\u2019 veru ma jridx\u00a0<\/span>is-<\/span>segwa\u010bi; irid jg\u0127allem lil \u0127addie\u0127or kif ikunu mexxejja. Jekk naraw li mexxej ma jg\u0127ix skont dak\u00a0 li jippriedka, allura\u00a0<\/span>qatt\u00a0<\/span>ma nistg\u0127ux nafdawh.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n A true<\/span>\u00a0leader<\/span>\u00a0does<\/span>\u00a0not need followers; they\u00a0<\/span>seek<\/span>\u00a0to teach others how to lead.<\/span>\u00a0They do not seek to control; they seek the truth. They do not impose their leadership on others and neither do they take anyone\u2019s autonomy. A true leader is a living example of what they preach. If a leader does not live according to what they preach, they cannot be trusted.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n A leader<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0therefore<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0has to h<\/span>ave a number of characteristics \u2013 they must be honest, confident, visionary, dedicated, have a positive attitude, creative, have the ability to inspire, be intuitive and, above all, be humble.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n We need to recognise the characteristics of a leader \u2013 not only so we rid ourselves of those individuals who seek support by appealing to the wishes and prejudices of the masses instead of making rational arguments \u2013 but so that we can recognise a true leader when we see one.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span>When people truly believe in a leader, they will put away their own personal interests.
