We have entered the era of accelerated\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">destruction<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0of species and we are facing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">irreversible loss of plants and animals, important habitats and crops\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and dealing with the dire impact of global climate change.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:142,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">L<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ast year<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0was characterised by heat waves across Europe and flooding and fires in countries on other continents. There is a sense of anger and collective anxiety. The\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">spectre of such environmental damage has created great concern, especially in youths around the world, about our ability to maintain health, productivity, security and our\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">livlihoods<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. We must also consider animals, insects, plants and their habitats.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:142,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In spite of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the profound threat of the loss of biodiversity, it is climate change that has been considered to be the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">main environmental concern. This changed in Paris at the beginning of May when\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">representatives of 130 nations approved the most comprehensive study to date on world diversity. The report,<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">based on<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">tergovernmental Science-Policy\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Platfor<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">m on Biodiversity and Ecosystem<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Services<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0(IPBES),<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0found that nature is being destroyed at an unprecedented rate in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0history.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:142,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A million species are today threatened by extinction and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">humankind is\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">sabotaging the natural infrastructure upon which our modern world is based.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:142,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Nature\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">boosts humankind\u2019s initiatives &#8211; that drive productivity, culture and, even, our faith and identities. But economies, livelihoods, food security and the quality of life around the world are under threat. We are exploiting nature at a faster rate than it can regenerate itself.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:142,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The IPBES<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0report shows that government and businessmen are not trying hard enough. The world stands to lose the goals of the agreement that was signed in Paris and 80 per cent of the sustainable development goals of the United Nations (food, water and energy security) because of the poor management of the natural world.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:142,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Having said this, the good news is that there are a number of policies and technologies that can<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0mitigate the increase in world temperature and can help us address conservation and the sustainable use of biodiversity. The way we produce and use energy, the way we use soil, how to protect coastal ecosystems and how we treat trees is key to our future. This can also help us increase our quality of life.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:142,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The world needs to acknowledge that the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0issue of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0loss of biodiversity and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">human-driven\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">climate chan<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ge<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0is not solely\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">environmental;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0it is also a development, economic, social, security and moral issue. The future of humanity depends on immediate action.
