The European Parliament elections have come and gone and the results are what they are.<\/span>\u00a0Two new Members of the European Parliament will be joining the established ones. The European Commission will be running the European Union under new management. What will the mandate of this new Commission be? Which priorities will the new European Parliament\u00a0<\/span>be<\/span>\u00a0working on? What will the future of the European Union be?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One must keep in mind that,<\/span>\u00a0until recently, this regional institution was threatened by expired intellectual ideas. Commentators on European affairs note that no implementable<\/span>\u00a0idea, not the slightest\u00a0<\/span>strategy<\/span>\u00a0idea was put forward by the so-called \u2018European elitists\u2019 through their think tanks and academic circles.\u00a0<\/span>As a\u00a0<\/span>consequence, say these commentators, \u201cthe Western intelligence has lost its foundation\u201d.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Also worth remem<\/span>b<\/span>e<\/span>ring<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>is\u00a0<\/span>that the French President Macron was elected on his\u00a0<\/span>vision of<\/span>\u00a0a regenerated Europe.\u00a0<\/span>The<\/span>\u00a0consensus was that Europe can adapt to the 21<\/span>st<\/span>\u00a0Century if it changed its outlook and radically restructured its institutions.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For many years<\/span>, European institutions were burdened with\u00a0<\/span>a range of responsibilities in a number of sectors but did not have the power, finances and technical capacity to manage them effectively.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Therefore<\/span>, what can<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>EU<\/span>, now under new management,\u00a0<\/span>do to become more relevant and, ultimately, to survive? I believe that if it is to gain the trust of its citizens, European technocrats cannot remain content working simply for the interests of the Union. The European Union must find a balance between the freedoms it provides and the protection it offers. An adequate strategy needs to be put in place on how Europe\u00a0<\/span>i<\/span>s to adapt; a strategy that will keep it from becoming obsolete.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The regularisation of digital platforms, the strengthening of cultural exchanges\u00a0<\/span>such as Erasmus, the priority that needs to be given to climate change, the search for better solutions to immigration, the transition from\u00a0<\/span>fossil fuel energy<\/span>\u00a0to renewable energy and a strengthening\u00a0<\/span>of democracy: these are likely to be the most suitable sectors for the regeneration of the European project.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
