The Department\u00a0<\/span>of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Industrial and Employment Relations (DIER) organized a national conference on the Future of Work at the\u00a0<\/span>Verdala<\/span>\u00a0Palace,\u00a0<\/span>Buskett<\/span>\u00a0on Friday, 10 May 2019.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The conference was addressed by the highest authorities\u00a0<\/span>of the country, among them the President of Malta, George\u00a0<\/span>Vella<\/span>, the Prime Minister, Joseph Muscat and the Leader of the Opposition, Adrian Delia.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The aim of this conference was to launch the consultation process\u00a0<\/span>with<\/span>\u00a0Government, interested parties and social partners on the International\u00a0<\/span>Labour<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Organisation\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0(ILO) document entitled\u00a0<\/span>Work for a Brighter Future<\/span><\/i>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The ILO document e<\/span>xamines<\/span>\u00a0how respective Governments,\u00a0<\/span>together\u00a0<\/span>with unions and\u00a0<\/span>employers\u2019 associations, ensure job sustainability through development and the nurturing of skills that<\/span>\u00a0meet the job market\u2019s current and future needs.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Josef\u00a0<\/span>Vella<\/span>,\u202fChief Executive of<\/span>\u00a0U\u0126M\u202f<\/span>Voice of the Workers<\/span><\/i>,<\/span>\u00a0was one of the speakers during a discussion on the fundamental rights of each worker. A number of subjects were touched upon, including decent pay to ensure a decent living, limits and flexibility of working hours, health and safety at the workplace and, also, using collective agreements to strengthen working conditions.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n During this discussion reference was made to technological advances, such as artificial intelligence, automation and\u00a0<\/span>robot<\/span>ics,\u00a0<\/span>that<\/span>\u00a0are creating new jobs.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0It was\u00a0<\/span>emphasised<\/span>\u00a0that the ones who are going to lose their jobs in this transition will be the ones who have not prepared themselves to make the best of new opportunities.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n We must grab the opportunities that these changes will present to create a better future to ensure economic security, equal opportunities and social justice.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Josef\u00a0<\/span>Vella<\/span>\u00a0said that<\/span>\u00a0we should always keep the worker and the work they do at the\u00a0<\/span>centre<\/span>\u00a0of economic and social policies. He added that job market policies need to be more pro-active.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The Chief Executive of\u00a0<\/span>U\u0126M\u202f<\/span>Voice of the Workers<\/span><\/i>\u202f<\/span>also spoke about the need for youths and workers to continuous learning and about their right to learn new skills.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n During the discussion it was<\/span>\u00a0stated that the future of work will require a resilient system of social welfare based on the principles of solidarity.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Throughout the conference it was mentioned that there need to be more opportunities to enhance workers\u2019 quality of life.
