Over 500 million European citizens will have the opportunity to influence the future direction of the European Union.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Politicians from the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">centre-right and the centre-<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">left<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0parties have so far had a comfortable majority in the main institutes of the EU, including the European Parliament, the European Council and the European Commission.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:142,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">This<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0can all change in the elections of May 2019 due to decreasing support of the traditional parties, the rise of the populists both on the radical right and the left, as well as new political entities.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:142,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The elections are being held\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">during a time of political upheaval within the European Union.\u00a0 An ever increasing number of European politicians do not uphold the values of democracy, rule of law, non-discrimination and other social values. If the existing balance of power were to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">be altered<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, a complex\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">group of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">forces c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ould<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0develop\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">through more\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">ad hoc<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0coalitions within the traditional political spectrum.\u00a0 While this could weaken the legislative efficiency of Parliament, a more open decision making process could have a positive impact on the public\u2019s interest in democracy at a European level.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:142,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">However, should the populist parties gain sufficient power to be able to block crucial decisions, the other parties will have to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">work together to enable the UE to function. If they do not do this, EU member governments will end up bypassing Parliament altogether.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:142,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The results of the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">European\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Parliament<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0elections will determine whether European Parliament members are going to be strong defenders of tolerance and the democratic values of Europe,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0or whether Parliament will be<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0weakened in this regard; whether the politicians who based their campaigns on conspiracy theories, fear and social divisions are going to be awarded promotions, and if the EU is going to be strong enough to ensure that rebel governments do not ask for economic subsidies while refusing to respect the rights of their residents and citizens.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:142,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Irrespective of the results of the e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">lections, the\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Voice of the Workers<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0will\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">carry<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0on supporting<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0efforts to increase participation and political representation, to create inclusive and tolerant political debate and to expose campaigns built on fake information that seek to manipulate the elections and will continue to support the social values of the EU of the future and hope for\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">more political accountability within the European Union.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:142,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; The\u00a0European Parliament elections,\u00a0that are going to be held between the 23rd\u00a0and the 26th\u00a0of May, are\u00a0among\u00a0the\u00a0biggest democratic events of the year.
