We also speak about the mental health of those who are entering pensionable age. But mental health problems do not disappear once a person becomes elderly \u2013 they carry on.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The struggle against solitude is the predominant\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">factor<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0that should be addressed.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Although the Government dedicates part of its Budget to the welfare of the elderly, this is not sufficient. Solitude\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">sometimes\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">taken to be\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the main problem in the treatment of mental health issues in the elderly.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0 Many of the symptoms of mental health issues would have been diagnosed years before. Some people have struggled with mental health issues all their lives. Social isolation can\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">contribute<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to their problems but this is not the whole story.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:142,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Other factors are important, for instance\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">physical conditions and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">lack of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">access to services<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0which seems to be a recurring problem<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Some may think that the services appear to be diminishing because of rising mental health issues, but this perception could also be due to how the services are reaching the people concerned.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:142,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Health authorities, speaking w<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ith the intention of helping family doctors identify mental health problems in the elderly<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, have remarked that professionals sometimes attribute the symptoms of mental health problems to age. The elderly are six times more\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">likely to be given a form of treatment by their doctors<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">han adults. However, research shows that there is a higher incidence of self-harming among the elderly and more valid reasons why such persons are given medical care. On a basic level, when we recognise that mental health issues do not suddenly disappear when one grows old, we would be making great strides.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:142,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If we were truly dedicated to fighting stigma in our society, and to increasing services to better the lives of people with mental health issues<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, we need to do more. Simply speaking about mental health issues is not enough.
