In a world that is\u00a0<\/span>increasingly run by technology and information the emphasis on education is justifiably turning to science, technology, engineering and mathematics \u2013 subjects that prepare students for future courses and careers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>However, life skills \u2013 that arm students to enable them to make good decisions and solve problems in their professional careers as well as in their private lives \u2013 also have a critical role to play in holistic education.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Life skills<\/span>\u00a0are the platforms that allow students to apply the knowledge they have gained at school<\/span>\u00a0to life problems and situations.\u00a0<\/span>Known also<\/span>\u00a0as soft skills in the professional context<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0they<\/span>\u00a0refer to one\u2019s ability to think and face one\u2019s problems from different angles to find practical solutions and one\u2019s ability to communicate clearly and effectively. They are as important as technical information in a particular sector or an academic subject.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Life skills are essential\u00a0<\/span>to face everyday challenges. Significant changes in the world economy that have occurred in the last few years have led the technological transformation and this is\u00a0<\/span>having<\/span>\u00a0an impact on education, the workplace and family life.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Life skills go beyond choosing a university course or impressing your future employer.<\/span>\u00a0Life skills provide students with essential development tools such as, for example, independent thinking, socialising and making new friends and how to act in situations in the absence of intervention by parents and teachers.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In\u00a0<\/span>everyday<\/span>\u00a0life,\u00a0<\/span>the development of life skills helps students to, among other things, recognise the impact of their actions and take responsibility for their actions rather than put blame on others.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In general, the more we<\/span>\u00a0develop<\/span>\u00a0our individual life skills, the more these can affect and benefit the society we live in. Respect\u00a0<\/span>towards diversity encourages creativity and imagination and helps develop a more tolerant society.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Moreover, the development of negotiation skills, the ability to network and to empathise can help us to find resolutions to problems rather than create more\u00a0<\/span>suffering.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
