This debate has been ongoing for a long while and it has now resurfaced in the news. Many\u00a0think\u00a0that the end of the dailies is within sight &#8211; they will not be around much longer. Having said this, sceptics of the printed media claim that the internet is simply a better source of news. They say that on the internet, the journals are live\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0can supplement their circulation with audio, clips and their invaluable vast archives.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:180,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Some commentators\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">insist<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0that newspapers have not yet died.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0It is true that the printed media is facing hard times, and it is true that the internet can offer\u00a0a number of\u00a0things that the printed journal cannot offer.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0 Journalism experts have been predicting the end of newspapers for many years. Radio, television and, now, the internet were expected to kill the printed\u00a0media\u00a0but the journals live on. Those who say that the future of news is online and only on the internet are forgetting a critical point \u2013 that the income from advertising on the internet is not\u00a0sufficient\u00a0to support news agencies.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:180,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0possibility that has not yet made it to Malta is the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">paywall<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0where the reader is asked to pay a membership fee to access a news service.\u00a0A number of\u00a0foreign journals and websites are implementing this system to generate income. Research shows that the success of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">paywalls<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0together with subscriptions to a print journal has led to stability and, in some cases, an actual increase in income from the journal circulation.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:180,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the age of Netflix, many people are accepting to pay for video content.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Using the same argument, therefore, it may be time for the public to start to pay for news content that is uploaded online. Why do we pay to have a printed journal in hand and not do the same for an electronic journal?\u00a0It should be pointed out that behind\u00a0every carefully compiled article that has been put online are hours of work and this should be duly appreciated.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:180,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">All in all, until someone comes up with a way to make an electronic journal profitable<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, the printed journal will endure.
