If only!<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Ideally, however, First Aid\u00a0should not be a subject that is taught in class like other subjects. I think that, however well it is taught, the subject will remain just another subject on the curriculum for the students.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>If First Aid, however, is introduced to Secondary school students in a relaxed environment, it will be appreciated better and\u00a0be\u00a0better understood.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In the article I read, a question was raised regarding whether the students should be taught to give CPR, that is, giving breath and doing compressions on the heart of a person who has lost consciousness and whose heart has stopped beating. First Aid experts say that CPR should be given as a last resort. When one is trained in First Aid, one will know that individuals who need assistance are not likely to reach the stage where they need it. However, there are cases where CPR is given when a person\u2019s heart stops beating. A person who knows what is happening to the body will know how the person who is ill or injured will react.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u0120emma Sirol,\u00a0the Commissioner of\u00a0<i>St. John Ambulance<\/i>,\u00a0spoke to\u00a0<i>Voice of the Workers<\/i>\u00a0and said that \u201cwhoever teaches the\u00a0students\u00a0needs to be very good at what they do and able to pass on the right message.\u201d CPR is a technical part of First Aid and one\u00a0needs\u00a0to know why\u00a0one is doing it\u00a0and be able to\u00a0do it quickly without wasting time.\u00a0\u201cMy wish is that everyone knows how to do it\u201d, said\u00a0\u0120emma Sirol.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>Automated External Defibrillator<\/i><i>s<\/i>\u00a0(AEDs)\u00a0are now found in many workplaces.\u00a0\u0120emma Sirol\u2019s comments on this were quite sceptical. She said \u201cif a person is not trained in CPR, that person should not even dream of using the AED\u201d.\u00a0Sirol\u00a0reminded us that when one gets to the point where the AED should be used one would be faced with a lifeless body. It is never easy to go through a situation like this; even if the person giving the First Aid is calm and collected.\u00a0\u0120emma Sirol\u00a0says that \u201cthe AED is a good piece of equipment but it is not a magic box \u2026 not\u00a0everyone has the same heart conditions\u201d. However, First Aiders do all they can to save a person whose heart has stopped beating.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>St. John Ambulance<\/i>\u00a0volunteers are, without a doubt, trained in the use of the AED and always take it with them in the ambulance when they are asked to provide a service during an event. However, the AED is among the least used equipment because unfortunately people do not lose their lives only because their hearts have stopped beating; they may die because they\u00a0bled\u00a0out or other reasons.\u00a0 It is very important that First Aid\u00a0techniques are\u00a0applied in\u00a0their\u00a0totality.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>How seriously do the Maltese take First Aid?\u00a0Us\u00a0Maltese usually take it very seriously when something happens that we cannot handle; or when a calamity occurs in the country that creates a great deal of hue and cry. This then has us count our blessings and\u00a0we\u00a0turn\u00a0to\u00a0St. John Ambulance\u00a0and the Maltese Red Cross for lessons in First Aid.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>There are also the famous\u00a0new\u00a0year\u00a0resolutions. Many people, every new year, promise themselves that they will learn First Aid. But they never fulfil the resolution. We all admit that we do a million things and we do not find time to learn or update our skills in First Aid.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Back to the\u00a0starting\u00a0point of this editorial.\u00a0We spoke about the need that students know First Aid.
