We have recently been subjected to transmissions from Parliament that\u00a0do\u00a0not do the highest\u00a0institution of the country any honour. During one particular sitting, while the Nationalist MP Simon\u00a0Busuttil\u00a0was speaking, chaos erupted and Labour MP Glenn\u00a0Bedingfield\u00a0was heard swearing. A few days later, during another sitting, it was\u00a0Minister\u00a0Jose\u2019 Herrera\u00a0who\u00a0lost it and could be heard making innuendos.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is happening? What\u00a0is causing this lack of propriety among members of parliament?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It seems that the sense of supremacy, especially among the\u00a0members of\u00a0parliament\u00a0from the\u00a0Government\u2019s side, is reigning supreme, so much so that observers\u00a0in the strangers\u2019\u00a0gallery could not help\u00a0but note the bullying directed at the Opposition members of parliament.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Some Government members of parliament\u00a0seem to think that they are the be-all and end-all. One must be in the\u00a0strangers\u00a0gallery to witness the behaviour of some of the members who have long forgotten the meaning of the word humility both in deed and thought.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

An observer who spoke to the Voice of the Workers said that during some of the sittings \u201cwe touch rock bottom because if they do not agree with you they will ridicule you\u201d. An example of this was the ridicule thrown at Nationalist MP Edwin\u00a0Vassallo\u00a0when he voted against the equality law. \u201cThe\u00a0sense of arrogance and superiority was overwhelming\u201d, said the Nationalist MP.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

An objective observer will note that this\u00a0attitude is not reserved for confrontations with the Opposition but is evident throughout the country. Commentators who spoke to this portal were all agreed that the\u00a0Government\u2019s\u00a0 behaviour\u00a0is hindering the country and the attitude of some of the Government\u2019s supporters is influencing a number of Labour workers who work in Government departments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What\u00a0is happening\u00a0in Parliament is not an issue of discipline or lack of\u00a0by the leaders of the House of Representatives. It is a reflection of the fact that we have lost track of what is good. The incidents of contempt and misconduct in Parliament are the result of extreme arrogance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When he spoke to\u00a0Voice of the Workers<\/i>,\u00a0Nationalist MP\u00a0Edwin Vassallo\u00a0reminded us that when the Nationalist Party was in Government there were Nationalist MPs who behaved in an arrogant manner. \u201cBut that was Kindergarten level arrogance when compared with the level of arrogance we are seeing today \u2026 when have we heard a member of parliament swear before? \u2026 since when does this\u00a0member of parliament\u00a0do what he does in private in the House?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One must inevitably come to the conclusion that at this point in time there are definitely no flowers growing in Parliament!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
