According to new research, children\u2019s educational benefits vary greatly depending on how they were raised and the qualifications or educational background of their parents.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Research shows that the children of highly educated parents and\u00a0middle class\u00a0parents benefit from better exam results if the parents take extended paid parental leave following the birth of their children.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>According to\u00a0academics from the universities of Warwick and Munich, the effect was predominantly significant in boys. Their research has provided the first concrete results on how parental leave can affect child development.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The study\u00a0also\u00a0found that\u00a0in the case of parents who had left school after they had completed obligatory\u00a0schooling,\u00a0longer maternity leave was associated with low scores in exams taken by their adolescent children.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The researchers from Warwick and from the\u00a0Ifo\u00a0Institute in Munich\u00a0did not find\u00a0any significant effect on the exam results of older children when parental leave was extended from one year to two. However, when they scrutinised the\u00a0results\u00a0in more detail, they were surprised to find a highly significant difference based on the parents\u2019 level of education.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The research carried out by\u00a0Natalia Danzer,\u00a0Deputy Director of\u00a0Ifo\u00a0and\u00a0Prof. Victor Lavy\u00a0from the University of\u00a0Warwick \u2013\u00a0published in the\u00a0<i>Royal Economic Society<\/i>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0was based on information gathered after Austria extended paid maternity leave from one year to two for children born after June 1990.
