But for victims of domestic violence the home represents the opposite: it is a source of stress and upheaval. The state is obliged to help them.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Domestic violence directed against women by their husbands or partners is an epidemic of global proportions that\u00a0has a\u00a0physical, emotional, financial and social impact on the women, children, family and community involved.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:180,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The recognition of domestic violence as a\u00a0violation of the human rights for women was a criticism of the efforts being made to address domestic violence.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:180,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The consequences of domestic violence, both physical and psychological, are so devastating that some consider\u00a0it\u00a0to be a form a torture.\u00a0Domestic violence affects not only the battered women and their children but also the community as a whole.\u00a0Given\u00a0the prevalence and persistence of domestic violence in almost every part of the world, the communities should react with a comprehensive strategy that incorporates public\u00a0support, a legal reform and education to fight this problem.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:180,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>At a press conference that was held recently, the Foundation for\u00a0Social Welfare Services (FSWS) announced that in 2017 there were 253 more victims of domestic violence who sought help\u00a0than\u00a0there were\u00a0in 2016.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:180,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>Voice of the Workers<\/i>\u00a0learned that domestic violence is not directed\u00a0only\u00a0at women; there are incidents of domestic violence in relationships between two members of the same sex and in relationships where one or both of the people involved are foreign.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:180,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The FSWS\u00a0emphasises the need for these victims to come forward and seek help through the services offered by social organisations.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:180,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The worst case of domestic violence is when there is a\u00a0good risk that the aggressor goes as far as killing the person, even keeping weapons in the house for that very reason. Of concern too is the fact that there is an increase in reports of domestic violence incidents involving children attacking their parents.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:180,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This portal calls for adequate sentences for people who are found guilty of such violent acts to reflect the severity of such violence.
