Last Wednesday\u00a0commenced\u00a0the\u00a0debate\u00a0on the\u00a0Good\u00a0Samaritan Act\u00a0in Parliament. This\u00a0bill was drawn up by the Opposition\u00a0to protect persons who go to others\u2019 aid\u00a0when they are involved in an accident\u00a0from civil or criminal prosecution.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This Private Member\u2019s Bill is driven by a genuine need to protect people who may hesitate from giving First Aid to those in need because they fear that they will unintentionally cause harm and risk ending up in court in spite of their good intentions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Voice of the Workers\u00a0would like to take the opportunity provided by this Bill to refer to the parable of the Good Samaritan and its relevance to today\u2019s society. This parable\u00a0does not simply offer a passage to reflect upon but provides us with a concrete example on how we should live and how we should treat strangers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Good Samaritan\u00a0presents us with a lifestyle which puts other people, with all their difficulties, at the centre, not ourselves, even if they challenge us.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Whether we choose to live\u00a0in this way is our choice. The Good Samaritan\u2019s attitude to life challenges our faith as, in Pope Francis\u2019 words, \u201cfaith, without action, is dead\u201d. It is good deeds, that are carried out with love and joy towards others, that nurture our faith and make it fruitful.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sometimes, all it takes is\u00a0a good deed\u00a0to brighten our day. A simple generous gesture by a stranger can do miracles for those in need.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Being a Good Samaritan means giving without expecting to receive anything in return from someone\u00a0who finds themselves\u00a0in trouble.\u00a0It could be a good deed that is done without anyone noticing or a big deed done for someone who is truly in need.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

You do not need to be a tv hero or another Gandhi to be a Good Samaritan. The only qualification is the ability to\u00a0empathise\u00a0with another, even someone you do not know, for just one moment. When we come across someone who is suffering a hardship or is in physical pain, let us not be\u00a0Christian in name only but true Christians who are able to help those in need. Let us not turn away. The society we live in, more than ever before, needs Good Samaritans.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
