\u201cThere needs to be serious investment in Artificial Intelligence and\u00a0we need to create an adequate economy which will keep the \u2018brainiacs\u2019 that graduate from the University of Malta in our country and not have them go employ themselves with large companies abroad.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These words were spoken by Professor\u00a0Alexiei\u00a0Dingli, Head of the Department of Artificial Intelligence, in an interview by the Voice of the Workers on the importance of Artificial Intelligence now and in the future.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Professor\u00a0Dingli\u00a0said that many people consider artificial intelligence to be the \u201celectricity of this millennium\u201d. This because this system is infiltrating all we do, so much so that sooner or later it will impact everyone\u2019s life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Professor\u00a0Dingli\u00a0explained that there are already a number of ongoing initiatives in Artificial Intelligence even with the industrial sector. The Department of Artificial Intelligence at the University of Malta is specialising in a number of sectors such as computer vision and gaming intelligence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Asked whether university students show an interest in studying\u00a0Artificial Intelligence,\u00a0Professor\u00a0Dingli\u00a0said that they did and explained that at least 50 percent of the students following a Masters in Information Technology are actually specialising in\u00a0Artificial Intelligence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This is because\u00a0Artificial Intelligence\u00a0is today infiltrating everything around us and is present within a number of companies. He said that there are factories that use\u00a0Artificial Intelligence\u00a0to manage operations, solve the waste problem and to ensure that the systems are monitored.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Professor\u00a0Dingli\u00a0reminded us that\u00a0Artificial Intelligence\u00a0never \u2018sleeps\u2019; you have a system that is working all the time, does not make mistakes and guarantees good results.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“There is a lack of about 600 specialists in Information Technology.\u00a0\u00a0“<\/span><\/h1>\n

The Head of the Department of\u00a0Artificial Intelligence\u00a0said that building a system of\u00a0Artificial Intelligence\u00a0requires an initial expenditure. However, once the structure is built, it will continue to work and give the required results.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Another\u00a0very\u00a0large sector\u00a0is that of Big Data. Some companies are handling too much information to process. The Department of\u00a0Artificial Intelligence\u00a0is providing programmes (algorithms) that help process information automatically.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nhttp:\/\/weekly.uhm.org.mt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/2.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n

He said that the Department he runs at the University of Malta is working on different levels to ensure that Malta is a participant in this sector.\u00a0Professor\u00a0Dingli\u00a0said that, on a national level, we lack about 600 specialists in Information Technology. This means that the University of Malta is not turning out a sufficient number of graduates in this sector.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nhttp:\/\/weekly.uhm.org.mt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/3.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n

He also visits industries and explains how\u00a0Artificial Intelligence\u00a0can help\u00a0them exploit their strengths. Thanks to this work, the Department of\u00a0Artificial Intelligence\u00a0is managing to set up agreements with different companies to carry out research on the advantages of applying\u00a0Artificial Intelligence, including economic advantages.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, for the teaching of\u00a0Artificial Intelligence\u00a0to move forward at the University there need to be more resources.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nhttp:\/\/weekly.uhm.org.mt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/4.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n

He added that we are not only competing among ourselves\u00a0in Malta\u00a0but we are also competing with other countries.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nhttp:\/\/weekly.uhm.org.mt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/5.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n

Professor\u00a0Alexei\u00a0Dingli\u00a0also spoke about the Blockchain and its use for Maltese workers and for the country in general. He said that the Blockchain will be used as a basis for a number of systems and we are not yet appreciating how much we need it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMaltese workers will start to feel its impact in a few years\u201d, said\u00a0Professor\u00a0Dingli, who added \u201clet us not forget that there are a number of technologies that work with Blockchain, including cryptocurrency\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Professor\u00a0Dingli\u00a0also spoke about interesting applications that are coming up in the next few years including smart contracts which cuts out the middleman, making it unnecessary for two parties to go to a notary to draw up a contract.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He concluded by saying that in the future we will be seeing\u00a0great changes in how we work \u2013 changes for the better but what is important is that these applications are made available and can be used by the general public.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
