{"id":1469,"date":"2018-06-22T14:37:50","date_gmt":"2018-06-22T12:37:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/weekly.uhm.org.mt\/?post_type=article&#038;p=1469"},"modified":"2018-06-26T13:22:28","modified_gmt":"2018-06-26T11:22:28","slug":"75-kaz-gdid-ta-melanoma-fis-sena","status":"publish","type":"article","link":"http:\/\/weekly.uhm.org.mt\/en\/article\/75-kaz-gdid-ta-melanoma-fis-sena\/","title":{"rendered":"75 new cases of melanoma a year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1470\" src=\"http:\/\/weekly.uhm.org.mt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/maxresdefault-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"943\" srcset=\"http:\/\/weekly.uhm.org.mt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/maxresdefault-1.jpg 1920w, http:\/\/weekly.uhm.org.mt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/maxresdefault-1-300x147.jpg 300w, http:\/\/weekly.uhm.org.mt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/maxresdefault-1-768x377.jpg 768w, http:\/\/weekly.uhm.org.mt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/maxresdefault-1-1024x503.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are about 75 new cases of melanoma each year, with\u00a0nine deaths\u00a0in 12 months\u00a0being reported\u201d.<span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This was announced by\u00a0Dr. Lawrence Scerri, dermatologist, in a recent interview with Voice of the Workers held at\u00a0Boffa\u00a0Hospital.<span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>He said that\u00a0these figures are significant given the size of our population.<span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7GhuHFVE1i8\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Dr.\u00a0Scerri said that\u00a0the problem of skin cancer is topical and awareness is ever growing, especially when it comes to the link between skin cancer and the sun, or more specifically, ultraviolet rays.<span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>He said that this subject is very much related to the\u00a0employment sector, particularly\u00a0outdoor work where the workers are exposed to the sun and may not be using the required protection.\u00a0Dr.\u00a0Scerri spoke about the employers\u2019 duty to ensure that workers who work outdoors have adequate protection to mitigate the risks.<span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Asked\u00a0what types of public information campaigns are being carried out,\u00a0Dr.\u00a0Scerri explained that Malta\u00a0participates\u00a0in the Euro Melanoma Campaign.<span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3rdrpxI4Ykc\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW221978872\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\"><span class=\"SpellingError SCXW221978872\">Dr.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW221978872\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW221978872\">\u00a0Scerri<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW221978872\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW221978872\">\u00a0said that this campaign has been ongoing for 20 years and focuses on different themes that tackle different aspects of the problem.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW221978872\" data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NiYwnpw3KkQ\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW185562431\" lang=\"MT-MT\" xml:lang=\"MT-MT\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW185562431\">Dr. Scerri\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW185562431\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW185562431\">added that studies show that people are very much aware of the problem of melanoma.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW185562431\" data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6iLSPLWtIIM\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The dermatologist\u00a0added that we are talking about a country, Malta, that is close to the African continent with a sunny climate which sees it being exposed to the sun for half a year. He said that\u00a0if one were to take a look at\u00a0the weather report one would note that the UV index is\u00a0generally\u00a0high,\u00a0indicating how strongly the sun shines on the Maltese islands.<span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Scerri\u00a0carried on to say that half the population has very white skin and these people are more susceptible to sun damage.<span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Voice of the Workers asked\u00a0whether\u00a0work-related cancers are a burden on the Maltese economy.
