On October\u00a015,\u00a01968, the original six founding members of the European Economic Community\u00a0(EEC)\u00a0adopted a Regulation on \u201cfreedom of movement for workers within the Community\u201d,\u00a0putting fully into effect Article 48 of the Treaty of Rome (currently\u00a0Article 45 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU<\/a>).\u00a0It did away with all the restrictions that the EEC countries had been allowed to impose during a transition period of\u00a010\u00a0years laid down by the Rome Treaty.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ever since then, it has been a matter of making all these rights effective by ironing out implementation difficulties, overcoming all sorts of practical obstacles, raising workers\u2019 awareness of their rights and helping national and local civil servants implement EU legislation in this area.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The EU states that it\u00a0supports mobility by helping job\u00a0seekers and employers in Europe find each other, wherever they are. It also seeks to make sure that the EU’s mobile workers are not abused and to help coordinate the fight against undeclared work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
