{"id":1420,"date":"2018-06-08T14:11:20","date_gmt":"2018-06-08T12:11:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/weekly.uhm.org.mt\/?post_type=article&#038;p=1420"},"modified":"2018-06-13T17:11:59","modified_gmt":"2018-06-13T15:11:59","slug":"l-ewro-parlamentari-jsejhu-lill-pajjizi-tal-ue-sabiex-itemmu-prattici-ta-xoghol-prekarju","status":"publish","type":"article","link":"http:\/\/weekly.uhm.org.mt\/en\/article\/l-ewro-parlamentari-jsejhu-lill-pajjizi-tal-ue-sabiex-itemmu-prattici-ta-xoghol-prekarju\/","title":{"rendered":"MEPs call on EU countries to end precarious employment practices"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1435 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/weekly.uhm.org.mt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/working-slaves-Precarious-work-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" srcset=\"http:\/\/weekly.uhm.org.mt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/working-slaves-Precarious-work-1024x576.png 1024w, http:\/\/weekly.uhm.org.mt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/working-slaves-Precarious-work-300x169.png 300w, http:\/\/weekly.uhm.org.mt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/working-slaves-Precarious-work-768x432.png 768w, http:\/\/weekly.uhm.org.mt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/working-slaves-Precarious-work.png 1140w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The European Parliament adopted on Thursday\u00a031st May\u00a0a resolution calling on the European Commission and EU countries to tackle the issue of precarious employment practices and the abusive use of fixed-term work contracts in the EU public and private sector.<span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The resolution was tabled by the Parliament\u2019s Petitions Committee, which has received many petitions concerning cases of unfair and alleged illegal working contracts and arrangements from all over the EU.<span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>More inspections needed<\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>EU countries must combat precarious employment practices, such as so-called \u201czero-hour\u201d contracts, and ensure that the\u202f<a href=\"http:\/\/curia.europa.eu\/juris\/document\/document.jsf?docid=160109&amp;doclang=EN\">precedent set by the EU Court of Justice<\/a>\u202fin European\u00a0labour\u00a0law is coherently respected, MEPs say. A \u201czero-hour\u201d contract is a working arrangement without a minimum number of guaranteed working hours.<span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Workplace inspections are also needed so that workers subject to temporary or flexible contract arrangements benefit from at least the same protection as all other\u00a0employees .<span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The interpretation by the EU court that repeated fixed-term contracts should be converted into contracts of indefinite duration must be properly adhered to by all EU countries and consistently incorporated into their respective legal\u00a0frameworks .<span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The resolution also:\u202f<span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"3\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\">calls on the Commission and EU countries to fully ensure equal pay for equal work at the same workplace,<span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"3\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\">stresses that the\u202f<a href=\"http:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/social\/main.jsp?catId=706&amp;langId=en&amp;intPageId=205\">EU Working Time Directive<\/a>\u202fmust be applied to workers on \u201czero-hour\u201d contracts, so that they are covered by the rules on minimum rest periods and maximum working times ,<span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"3\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\">invites EU countries to improve job standards in non-conventional jobs by providing, at the very least, a set of minimum standards for social protection, minimum wage levels and access to training,<span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"3\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\">denounces the renewal of fixed-term contracts with the aim of covering needs which are not temporary in nature, but fixed and permanent,<span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"3\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"4\" data-aria-level=\"1\">insists that EU countries assess legislation concerning precarious work in relation to its gender impact, as women constitute an already over-represented group that will continue to be overly affected.<span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The resolution was approved by 312 votes in\u00a0favour\u00a0and 75 against, with 155 abstentions.<span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;
