A recent\u00a0report<\/a>\u00a0issued\u00a0jointly by the Social Protection Committee and\u00a0the European Commission\u00a0on pension adequacy,\u00a0analyses how sustainable pensions can help prevent poverty at retirement age.\u00a0In line with one of the principles of the\u00a0European Pillar of Social Rights<\/a>,\u00a0Member States are increasing their efforts to ensure a high level of social protection, including pension adequacy, through facilitating mutual learning and exchange of best practices.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Compared with a decade ago, one can notice that\u00a0there are\u00a0fewer older Europeans at risk of poverty or social exclusion which\u00a0increases with age. More than half of all older people at risk of poverty or social exclusion in the EU are aged 75 or over. This is due to the fact that while needs increase with age, the value of pensions decreases during retirement.\u00a0That is why sustaining adequate pensions in ageing societies is key to the economic growth, as pensions are both the main source of income for older Europeans and an important component of\u00a0public expenditure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
