Workers\u2019 Day\u00a0is a holiday with\u00a0a\u00a0particular tradition for us Maltese,\u00a0that changed over time but always sought to inspire\u00a0workers\u00a0to maintain unity, to look out for one another\u00a0and\u00a0 keep\u00a0to the spirit of solidarity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the principles\u00a0held by the union is loyalty. A union works and strives for unity and to ensure that an agreement made between two parties is adhered to. Loyalty means that if an agreement is not reached between the parties concerned they return to the negotiating table.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNo one should\u00a0approach the table, neither employer nor employee, with the idea that anyone is superior or more indispensable than anyone else\u201d, said the Archbishop of Malta, Charles J.\u00a0Scicluna\u00a0in his speech during the Workers\u2019 Day conference\u00a0organised by\u00a0U\u0126M Voice of the Workers\u00a0organised at the end of last week.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Loyalty means that if we are going to criticise, we criticise on the basis of fact.\u00a0We are living in an environment where the social media, which should presumably help foster loyalty, are being abused and are breaking down loyalties among us. Loyalty calls for respect of diversity of opinion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0U\u0126M Voice of the Workers\u00a0believes in values, particularly human values. When it embarks on negotiations, a union needs to learn to keep itself in check. It needs to have the courage to\u00a0choose what is right even at a cost. In his speech, the Archbishop spoke about the value of prudence, where one dialogues and listens; prudence teaches that one does not only strive to obtain one\u2019s rights but that one does not forget one\u2019s responsibilities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Another value that is important in trade unionism is justice.\u00a0This union firmly believes in meritocracy, where one is given what one deserves. The\u00a0U\u0126M Voice of the Workers\u00a0strives, and will continue to strive, for the sacrosanct principle of equal pay for equal work. For this union, justice is also a workplace not shying away from employing people with disability and giving them an opportunity to work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We should all\u00a0strive to be more just at all levels of society.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the\u00a0themes of the conference this year was professionality. The root of professionality is ongoing skill development, training and always seeking to work in a way which sets best practice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0U\u0126M Voice of the Workers\u00a0is in favour of worker flexibility to ensure that a worker can adapt and evolve. A worker who advances at the workplace will feel more appreciated and gains in dignity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the Archbishop\u2019s words, \u201cloyalty makes our lives easier,\u00a0strong values make us human and professionality helps us all contribute to the common good.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
